“Bad Things” – Bad Things

So it turns out professional snowboarder and Olympic gold medalist Shaun White DOESN’T just snowboard all day… He is also the guitarist in a rock band known as Bad Things, whose debut self-titled album dropped on January 21st. I can safely say that it is the first decent rock album of the year (Transgender Dysphoria Blues by Against Me! wins best punk album so far, and Springsteen’s new album… just no). The album rips open with the band’s big single, “Anybody,” which sounds like indie rock-fueled Foo Fighters. Most songs on the album have this basic sound, with heavy guitar riffing, vocals dripping with reverb, and very catchy choruses highlighted by pitch-perfect harmonies. Every so often you’ll run into a slow rocker, like “Caught Inside” and “Bury,” or you’ll stumble across the occasional dance beat, like on “Saturday Night,” arguably the big standout on Bad Things. It is very easy to tell the band drew on plenty of influences during the writing of these songs. “Lonely Eyes” has an intro not unlike those of Kings Of Leon, and “Lost Feeling” has that unmistakable throwback ’60s rock n’ roll revival sound like Jet’s Get Born. All in all, the songs may deviate here and there, but each one rocks hard in its own way.
